International Translation Day observed

Imphal, September 30 2021: Sahitya Thoupang Lup, Imphal observed 'International Translation Day' at Manipur Press Club here oh Thursday.

As part of the observance, 'Nongthombam Kunjamohan Translation Award-2021' was presented to Aribam Kumar Sharma (SK Sharma), also a recipient of Sahitya Akademi Translation Award.

Presided over by Sahitya Akademi awardee Saratchandra Thiyam, the observance was also attended by DM University VC Professor N Rajmuhon as chief guest.

Speaking on the occasion, Saratchandra emphasised on the importance of translation and said that the government needs to set up a State Translation Department.

Translation is not only relevant with literature but is also important for varied subjects.

However, its importance has been overshadowed for a long time.

Thus, the government needs to pay close attention and help in the development of this held, including opening translation department in the universities as well, he stressed.

Saratchandra continued that although the state is not lacking in terms of-literary wealth, various works cannot show their prowess outside the state due to the script being in the native language.

If the various literary works of the state including stories, poems and books were to be translated and published, it would be able to show the state's literary deep.

Additionally, efforts should be made for the field to take strong roots so as to allow emergence of more translators, he added.

In his speech, Rajmuhon said that translation is no longer considered a sole element of literature, especially with its growing importance in varied subjects including science.

Apart from this, translation is increasingly becoming a key component in strengthening and integrating the relationships etween different countries or communities.

Thus, the field of translation needs to be properly developed, he asserted.

During the function, various poems which were translated into Manipuri were recited.

Later, Sahitya Thoupang Lup president Tongbram Amarjit spoke on the topic of "Translation and Indigenous Languages" as resource person.
