Scribe withdraws hunger strike over urea

Naharolgee Thoudang senior correspondent and former Socio-Economic Development Organisation (SEDO) Hiyanglam president Elangbam Bormani of Hiyanglam Mayai Leikai has withdrawn his hunger strike which began on Thursday at Hiyanglam Lai Pangalba Keithel demanding fair and timely distribution of urea to farmers, after an agreement was reached with the government on Friday.
The protest ended after an MoU was signed between Bormani and Wabagai MLA Dr Usham Deben and Kakching deputy commissioner Somorjit Salam along with district agriculture officer (DAO) Kakching/Thoubal Naorem Joykumar representing the government, which agreed that urea will be provided to all the farmers of Hiyanglam by July 30 and in the first phase, 500 bags of fertiliser will be distributed at the earliest.
Earlier, a team comprising MLA Dr Deben, DC Somorjit, sub divisional officer Kherdananda Potshangbam, DAO Kakching/ Thoubal Naorem Joykumar, Kakching additional SP (Ops) Binoy Chongtham, SDPO Konjengbam Gitchandra, Hiyanglam police station OC Oinam Joymangol among others visited the protest site and held talks with E Bormani, Hiyanglam former MLA Elangbam Dwijamani and supporters of Bormani.
During the talks, Bormani pointed out that the every year the state faces the same issue of unavailability of urea and delay in its distribution, which needs to be addressed by the government.
This year also, farmers of Hiyanglam area as well as in other parts of the state are not getting their required urea, which the government must resolve.
There is also unfair distribution of urea under the Hiyanglam MLA and it needs to be looked into, he said.
Responding to Bormani, MLA Deben said that the government is working to resolve shortage of urea in the state and by July 18 the required quantity of urea will be brought to the state and distributed to the farmers.
Farmers of Hiyanglam will also be given their required quantity of urea very soon, he assured and appealed to Bormani to withdraw the hunger strike.
