Imphal, July 15 2022:
Premiere show of 'Haoba Konu', a new production of Manipur Dramatic Union (MDU) produced under the aegis of Sangeet Natak Akademi and directed by the Union's vice-president B Jugolchandra Sharma, was presented at the auditorium of the union, Yaiskul Police Lane, here on Friday.
Speaking as chief guest of the event, former IPR director and film critic Meghachandra Kongbam noted that MDU is a leading theatre group of the state and it has been playing major role in educating the masses and bringing changes in the society through drama.
Unfortunately, popularity of drama is gradually declining in the state with the younger generations not able to comprehend its values, he said.
Stressing the need for reviving the old values and identities of drama and theatre, Meghachandra suggested introduction of the art form in school curriculum as it may help encourage the younger generations to get engaged in the art form.
This suggestion should be placed before the government for a proper policy, he said.
Meghachandra also proposed weekly gathering of theatre artistes, and added that the union can also use its new play for participation in exchange programmes at zonal and national level.
North East Zone Cultural Centre, Dimapur member Saratchand Thiyam, who also attended the event as guest of honour, hailed the contribution of MDU in the theatre movement of the state and called upon the younger generation to promote the art form.
He also thanked MDU for producing its new play based on the story of 'Haoba Konu'.
MDU president Soraisam Keshoram was the functional president of the event.
