Imphal, May 11 2022:
In protest against non-appointment of director of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) for the last 13 months, Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has closed down the office of SCERT located at Lamphelpat from Wednesday.
A team of DESAM led by its general secretary M Somorjit came and shut down the office after herding off the staffers outside its complex.
The agitated DESAM members have also put the main gate of the office complex under lock and key.
Speaking to media persons, M Somorjit denounced that the government is only doing lip service even though it is claiming of taking up activities for improving the education system in the state.
The non-appointment of SCERT director, which is vital for bringing change in the education system and also deals with framing syllabus and training of teachers, for the last 13 months, is a vivid example of government apathy to interest of the students.
Enquiring whether the government is trying to abolish SCERT, Somorjit said that there is no meaning of the office without its director and insisted that post should be filled at the earliest or else the office would remain shut.
While making it clear that the office should be opened only after appointment of the director, the general secretary cautioned of launching more intense protest if the office is opened forcefully.
All the responsibilities for any untoward incident should be borne by the government if they tried to open the office without fulfilling the demands of the students, he warned.
