Thoubal, May 11 2022:
A public meeting organised by locals of Waithou Ching at Waithou Khongnang-Kachin community hall deliberated on chief minister N Biren's declaration on April 23 that eviction drive would be carried out within a month's time.
The meet which was attended by people from Waithou, Tangjeng Toronglaobi, Sangomsang, Waithou Khongnang-Kachin, Lipokpi Leimang-Konjin, Sotu-Karong, Usoipokpi, Thararok, Mairenkhun-Chingya, etc., resolved that the government should not include people staying at surrounding areas of Waithou Ching in the proposed eviction as they have been living in the areas with government approval.
Reading out the resolution of the meeting to the media, one M Inao of Waithou stated that local elders have revealed that the areas surrounding Waithou hills have been settled by people since 1925 and in 1954 some persons were given AP-Patta as official documents allowing them to build houses and reside in these areas by the then king of Manipur.
Revenue Department also allotted land pattas to some people of the area in 1963 and by 1985 most of the locals were provided pattas by the department.
As such, the locals have been living in the area with government approval, he noted.
Inao further appealed to the chief minister to allow the locals to continue to reside near the foothills of the Waithou Ching considering the said circumstances.
