Social media should be used positively: Dr S Ranjan

An award presentation ceremony of the Short Video Competition held under the theme 'Kanglei Ningol Amadi Mataroising' was organised by RK Production Family at Manipur Press Club, here, on Thursday.
The Competition was won by Amalgum Production's 'Ningol Lipun' With Mapari Mamom Production's 'Khourangna Ngaijarakpa' getting the 1st runner-up position; Mayanglambam Film Production's 'Eigi Epuroibadi Pirangni' the 2nd runner-up; Rk Nomita Film Production's 'Emana Soidana Pugani' the 3rd runner-up and Thaimei Jackson's 'Lapnaruraba Ningol' the 4th runner up.
The winners were presented with cash prizes and gift hampers by the dignitaries during the event.
Speaking as chief guest, IPR minister Dr Sapam Ranjan informed that with advancing technology, social media has become major influence in modern society and should be used in positive manner.
Numerous news channels have come up in recent times with rise in technology.
A discussion was also held on issues arising from such prolific number of news channels on social media during the National Press Day observance held on Wednesday, he added.
The minister stressed that such news channels should know newsworthiness and broadcast only factual reports.
There is need to control such news channels cropping up day by day on social media in legalised manner.
Government is discussing to regulate them under a system, while allowing them to continue functioning within their rights, he confided.
Noting that Manipur is known over the world for its talented personalities, S Ranjan wished RK Production to sustain its good work and show to the world the history and beauty of the state.
He also stressed that YouTubers should work to portray the state positively to the world.
Ranjan continued that the state government has taken up schemes such as 'Start-Up' to support the talented people of the state so that they could stand up on their own and become successful in their chosen fields.
The programme was also attended by Kshetrigao MLA Sheikh Noorul Hassan; Imphal West Zilla Parishad up-adhyaksha Laishram Boby Devi; Wahengbam Irrigation Enterprises proprietor Wahengbam Jadumani and Medilane Foundation MD Dr Moirangthem Pibarel Meetei as special guests.
