Bishnupur, April 02 2023:
After getting information that three 'Kharsas' (hog deer) are being chased by four-five dogs in a paddy field near Amanbi river in Ishok village under Nambol assembly constituency on Sunday morning, a team of Ishok Apunba Club and Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Bishnupur District Branch led by Green Universal Foundation president & IRCS Bishnupur secretary Dr Huidrom Romen, Youth Progressive Club advisor Seram Hemba and Social Development Institute advisor RK Muhen rushed to the spot and rescued three deer.
The three rescued hog deer were then taken to their original habitat and set free.
While returning after the rescuing and setting free the animal, the team reportedly came across carcass of a male hog deer lying in the field which was mutilated from behind and was in decomposed state.
The team immediately reported it to the DFO Bishnupur for further action.
Speaking to media persons after the rescue operation, Dr H Romen lamented that the 'Kharsa' deer species included in Schedule 1 of Wildlife Act and found in water bodies of Ishok village is facing serious survival challenge.
While expressing strong suspicion that some people are using dogs to hunt the deer, he urged the locals to inform them if anyone encounters dogs chasing 'Kharsa' next time.
He also appealed to dog owners not to let their dog roam free.
Dr H Romen also stated that 'Kharsa' population in Ishok village is probably the highest in the whole state.
Though there have been occasions where steps were taken for conservation of the hog deer in Ishok village by forest & environment minister and top officials of Forest Department, lack of a specific conservation policy for 'Kharsa' is making their chance of survival bleak, he further observed.
