Imphal, April 02 2023:
Manipur Human Rights Commission former acting chairman and senior advocate Khaidem Mani has stated that delay in delivering justice in many different cases in the state is due to shortage of judges, right from the High Court of Manipur to the lower courts.
Addressing a press meet held at his Loklaobung residence on Sunday, Mani said that judiciary plays an important role in ensuring rule of law and good governance.
However, the judiciary has been unable to fulfil its responsibility effectively in the state due to shortage of judges.
He pointed out that the post of Chief Justice in the High Court of Manipur is lying vacant, and contrary to the required strength of four Justices, the High Court has only three at present.
In addition, there is shortage of Grade I & II judges for the courts of Sessions Judge in the districts, with one judge being in charge of 2-3 courts, which in turn is slowing down the process of delivery of justice.
Thus, Mani urged the government to appoint the required judges at the earliest to allow the courts to function properly.
It is also time to fill in the vacant public prosecutor and assistant public prosecutor posts and further, set up Revenue Court which could sit 2-3 times in a week to resolve all the different issues of the Revenue Department.
Time has come for the government to take action in an appropriate manner to ensure a strong rule of law in the state, he stressed.
