148 crimes against women in 2021: WAD

The state witnessed 148 cases of crimes against women in 2021, said a report compiled by Women Action for Development (WAD) based on reports published in the media, cases registered in various police stations and reports from NGOs working on women issues.
The report mentions that in 2021 media reported 148 incidents of crimes against women including 31 cases of rape, one gang rape, eight murder, five suicide, 10 suspicious death, five molestation, four cybercrime, 23 assault, three life attempt, 24 missing, two deliver}' death, one assault with delivery, six kidnapping, four child marriage attempt, five medical negligence death, two rape attempt, one abandonment, one domestic violence, nine crowd control assault and one sexual harassment in the state.
Imphal West district led in the crime chart with 39 cases followed by Thoubal district (29), Imphal East (28), Bishnupur (13); Ukhrul (five), two each in Kamjong, Jiribam and Chandel districts, Tengnoupal (four) .
Kangpokpi and Senapati (three each), Churachandpur (eight) and Kakching district seven cases.
Three more cases were reported from outside the state.
In 2020, the state had 190 cases related to crimes against women which comparatively indicated that such cases have decreased in 2021 in the state, but many incidents may not have been reported by the victims.
It can also be noted that there is increase in complaints filed in cases of crimes against women nowadays, instead of sweeping under the carpet previously.
