Imphal, April 27 2022:
In remembrance of the day Manipur lost its independence on April 27 following the defeat in the Anglo Manipuri War-1891; International Peace and Social Advancement (IPSA) in association with Dark Day Observation Committee 2022 commemorated the 24th Dark Day at GM hall here on Wednesday.
As part of the tribute event, the gathering observed a two minute silence as a mark of respect to all those brave hearts who gave their lives fighting for the motherland in the war.
Speaking as chief guest of the solemn function, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar remarked that the observance is important in the sense that it signals the need for the present generation to cultivate the same patriotic and courageous spirit of our forefathers.
By following the lessons of our forefathers, we can guide Manipur to stand tall along with the developed nations of the world.
Thus, he urged for collective efforts from the people in ushering in peace and development in the state.
In his speech, IPSA general secretary Wairokpam Guneshwor recounted how the British hoisted the Union Jack at Kangla Fort on April 27, 1891, marking the end of Manipur's independence and sovereignty.
Thus, the day is observed to remind the present generation of the once independent era of Manipur and to further assume the responsibility left behind by the brave hearts towards the motherland, he added.
Presided over by IPSA president Tourangbam Birjit, the observance was attended by National and international awardee H Ibotombi Khuman; IPSA advisor Luwangcha Chingkhei; historian Naorem Joykumar and World Thang-Ta Federation president Huidrom Prem-kumar as guests of honour.
Later, the descendents of the brave hearts were honoured by presenting simple gifts.
