Imphal, April 27 2022:
While opposing the move of GST Council to hike GST rates for several items, CPI Manipur State Council has termed the policy as an act of robbing the common people.
In a statement, CPI Manipur State Council said that common people, farmers and labourers have been pushed further into poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Amid such situation, the Modi government is levying hefty taxes on petroleum products, which also resulted in hiking of prices of other essential commodities.
Besides, the GST Council is in the process of hiking tax slab for several items, the statement pointed out, while adding that increasing the indirect tax will have direct impact on the people, who are facing hardships in trying to maintain their families.
The impact would be minimal for employees under state and Central governments as the government enhances their dearness allowance after calculating the Wholesale Price Index and Consumer Price Index.
However, those in the unorganised sector are bearing the impact of the indirect tax enhancement.
The statement also alleged the Modi government of trying to make up the loss in GDP by recovering huge tax from the public, who are already facing severe hardships due to Covid-19 pandemic.
