Conference on Loktak Lake organised

In commemoration of its 15th foundation day, Biodiversity, Ecology & Environment Network, Manipur (BEE NET, Manipur) organised a one-day conference on 'Understanding the Loktak Lake' at Manipur University Court Hall on Friday.
The programme was attended by MU Department of Life Sciences retired professor P Kumar Singh and BEE NET vice president Prof N Mohilal Meitei as presidium members.
Speaking at the event, Prof N Mohilal, who is also MU Zootogy HoD, informed that conference was envisaged to compile and document various stories, poems and studies based on Loktak Lake.
While recounting that Loktak used to have abundant fishes, apart from being the habitat of various avian species, Prof Mohilal pointed out that rapid pollution has worsened condition of the freshwater lake.
He then called upon all concerned to strive for conserving the lake and preventing further pollution.During the technical session, KIIT University, Bhubaneswar Technology Business Incubator BRTC manager Dr Rajiv Kangabam spoke on the topic 'Human Footprints on the Loktak Lake' .
Panel member and MU Zoology associate professor Dr Ksh Birla Singh discussed the points raised by the speaker with inputs on conservation steps of the lake while another panellist Dr N Sanatomba Singh of MU Manipuri Department elaborated on the folklores, folksongs and stories associated with the lake.
It may be mentioned that BEE NET Manipur was founded in 2007 at MU with the objective of working for a holistic approach to biodiversity conservation and environmental protection in Manipur.
It had initiated tree plantation programmes and environmental awareness campaigns in different districts during 2007-2010 .
In addition, it publishes occasional research papers, policy statements, books and a biennial newsletter called BeeNews.
