Assam Rifles foiled illegal smuggling of various items at different places of Manipur.
Chandel Battalion foiled an attempt to smuggle 'Radiated Tortoise', a rare wildlife species, from Laiching village close to the Indo Myanmar border yesterday, said a statement issued by PRO Assam Rifles.
In another instance, Shangshak Battalion Assam Rifles intercepted three trucks with timber which were being illegally transported from Maku village in Ukhrul district today morning.
The market value of the smuggled timber was assessed to be worth Rs 4.32 crore.
Three drivers of the trucks were also apprehended and identified as Ningthoujam Ashok Kumar Singh of Leimakhong Mapal, Md Riyajuddin of Khurai and Elangbam Somendro Singh of Heirok Part-II, added the statement.
Meanwhile Kakching Battalion Assam Rifles recovered illegal brown sugar and betel nuts from a Maruti Gypsy without registration number near Shaluk village in Kakching district yesterday.
Nine packages of brown sugar concealed in soap cases and 700 kgs of betel nuts were seized from the vehicle driven by one Sheikhomang Haokip, a resident of Sugnu, added the statement.
The seized narcotics were assessed to work over Rs 35 lakh.
The seized items and apprehended drivers were handed over to respective Police Station for further investigation.
