Kuki CSOs declare shutdown in Ukhrul

Kangpokpi, August 05 2026: Tensions in Ukhrul district escalated dramatically on Wednesday as the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul (WCKCSOs-Ukhrul) enforced an indefinite total shutdown from August 5 midnight, accusing the Manipur Government of "complete inaction" despite weeks of peaceful protests and an 48-hour ultimatum served to end "selective economic blockade" against the Kuki community.

The shutdown was imposed after the expiry of the committee's 48-hour ultimatum.

Despite verbal assurances given by the Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul, the authorities have failed to address the issue and end the "selective blockade," said WCKCSOs-Ukhrul.

It said Wednesday marked the 10th day of its counter economic blockade, launched in response to the "selective economic blockade," allegedly being enforced by "certain Tang-khul and Meitei groups" disrupting the movement of essential commodities into Kuki-inhabited areas.

Announcing the indefinite shutdown from August 5 midnight, the committee said only electricity and water supply, telecommunication services, medical emergencies, airport-bound passengers, postal services and security forces' vehicles would remain exempt, "subject to strict frisking" .

It also stipulated that the Army, Assam Rifles, BSF, CRPF and the State Police convoys engaged in operational duties would not escort civilian vehicles.

Convoy commanders shall communicate the tentative timing, strength and composition of convoys in advance to the committee's designated media and security officials, it said.

Anyone attempting to violate the shutdown would do so "at their own risk" and would be held responsible for the consequences, it added.

Separately, the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU), Sadar Hills said its counter [economic] blockade along National Highway-2 will continue until the United Naga Council (UNC) completely withdraws its blockade.

However, in a significant relaxation, CoTU announced that passengers travelling along NH-2 and empty vehicles would now be allowed to pass through after proper checking and verification.
