Thoubal, August 22 2013:
Atleast 250 houses have been inundated since the past 10 days in Leishangthem village of Thoubal district.
The flood which was mainly caused by the over flowing water from nearby Ikop lake has also submerged around 300 fishing ponds and a vast area of paddy fields.
According to villagers, failure of sluice gates of mini dam constructed over Imphal river at Khelakhong Thongjin and blocking of water at Ithai Barrage were the main reasons which have troubled Leishangthem village.
Once the embankment of Arong river is done and the mini dam at Khelakhong is repaired, no flood would trouble the villagers, they added.
The villagers also lamented that no Government officials visited the village after it was submerged with flood water.

The villagers expressed worry to a visiting media team that the water level was increasing day after day.
The situation would worsen if the rain does not stop in the coming days, they added.
As waist deep water has submerged most of the houses, villagers are facing lots of inconveniences.
Meanwhile, Voluntary Educational Development Social and Cultural Organisation (VEDSCO) and United Development Association (UDA) have said that flood water coming from Ikop lake has submerged 13000 paris of paddy field at Khangabok Part-III area.
In a joint press statement, the organisations urged the Government to complete construction of embankment of Arong river at Khangabok area and take up measure to drain away excess water from Ikop lake.
