Imphal, August 22 2013:
With the shutter of the small dam constructed at Khelakhong Khongin to divert water from Ekop Pat to Imphal River left opened, water from Imphal River has caused man-made flood in Thoubal Leishengthem, which incidently happens to be the constituency of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.
The dam shutter which was actually opened to serve as an 'outlet' for excess water from Ekop Pat to drain into Imphal River, acted the other way round as 'inlet' of water from Imphal River towards Ekop Pat.
In the process, the level of Ikop Pat not only risen but also caused flood in Leishangthem Khong Manung Maning Leikai area.
The flood water, which has been creating havoc for the last 10 days, has immersed more than 250 houses in the area.
All the paddy fields, fish farms and fish ponds have been damaged by the manmade flood.
The people of the area have expressed disappointment over the attitude of the State Government for not sending any relief material or paying an inspection to assess the situation.
It is said that the flood water in the area is still rising.
