PWD warns highway 'encroachers'

Public Works Department has cautioned that illegally occupying Right of Way (RoW) of national highways and other important roads will be treated as a punishable offence.
In the notification, PWD chief engineer Kh Temba Singh advised individuals who are occupying RoW for parking condemned vehicles and machines, keeping construction materials and temporary structures to clear the road within 15 days with im mediate effect, failing which the department will initiate suitable method of disposal.
It said that individuals illegally occupying the RoW will be treated as an offence punishable with fine of Rs 200 per day for construction materials, and Rs 200 per sqm/day for temporary structures and equipment.
In case the individual fails to clear the RoW within 15 days, the department can initiate imprisonment for up to 90 days and confiscation of materials and clearance, it added.
The notice mentioned that the decision has been taken in a meeting held on road congestion and inconvenience caused to general public by certain individuals occupying RoW.
