Imphal, February 18 2014 :
Expressing serious concern over the assault of journalist Aribam Dhananjoy alias Paojel Chaoba of Imphal Free Press by personnel of 1st Indian Reserve Battalion at northern Kangla Gate on February 10 while he was returning home from office, Asia Pacific Indigenous Youth Network (APIYN) and Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) have jointly submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh; Chairperson of National Human Rights Commission; Chief Justice of Supreme Court; Union Minister of Social Justice & Empowerment and Chief Minister of Manipur on February 16 .
In the memorandum, the two organisations observed that the assault on Chaoba is yet another glaring example of continuing human rights violation in the country which is a matter of concern and pointed out that many journalists and human rights defenders have been subjected to extra judicial execution, torture and illegal detention on several counts.
The memorandum also urged both the Government of Manipur and India to prosecute and punish the personnel of 1st IRB involved in the assault on the journalist and initiate adequate measures to protect the human rights and personal integrity of all journalists in the State.
