Indigenous games rekindle Hunphun Luira festival

The celebration of Luira Phanit, a Tangkhul traditional seed sowing festival, under way in Ukhrul district with a variety of indigenous games competed among the locals at Mission Ground here.
Hundreds of people in traditional fineries, from different nook and cranny of Ukhrul, converged and revelled themselves today at Mission Ground.
The festival kicked off on February 14 and will draw its curtain down on Wednesday with Miss Luira Beauty Pageant as the highlight of the grand finale.
NF Railways (RPF) chief security officer SZ Samuel Zimik graced today's occasion as chief guest and exhorted the gathering on the need to preserve and promote the Tangkhul rich culture.
On Tuesday, a bright weather favoured the festival as traditional games comprising Tug of War, Wrestling, Mock War and cultural dance were competed among the locals amidst pomp and gaiety.
In tomorrow's beauty pageant, 11 girls will vie for coveted Miss Luira crown.
The winner will walk home richer by Rs.50,000, and the contest has also lined up five sub-titles.
The grand finale will also showcase Laa Khanganui (Virgin Dance), Open Wrestling competition among others.
This year's festival is being organized by Hunphun Tangkhul Frontal Organisations and sponsored by Hunphun Hanga Wungnao.
