Flash flood fury rages in hill districts; Jiribam flooded

Imphal, June 19 2022: Continuous rainfall in since Friday night has severely affected at-least three hill districts due to flash flood and landslides while many areas under Jiribam district are under flood water as major rivers in the border district are flowing above the danger level.

Due to incessant heavy rainfall, flash flood was triggered in T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters around 7 am Sunday.

The flash flood swept through the heart of T Vaichong sub di visional headquarters, creating havoc in the main bazar area, causing heavy damage to three houses and partially inundating the bazar area.

On learning of the incident, neighbouring villagers immediately rushed to the sub-divisional headquarter to help the people and evacuated most of the residents of the bazar area to a safer place.

The flash flood carried away a refrigerator and an LPG cylinder along with many other utensils from a hotel belonging to one Sosei after damaging the hotel.

The flood also damaged the residential houses of Ajit Bhujel and Angam Leivon.

Flood water flowed into every house in the low-lying areas of main bazar.

The flash flood also caused damage to the drinking water source of the sub-divisional headquarters and partially inundated paddy fields in the area.

It may be mentioned that Imphal-Tamenglong road had been already cut off at Lamlenkon by a mudslide which is yet to the cleared.

The alternate PMGSY road from Thonglang Atongba could no longer be used owing to yet to be completed bridge and the last and the only remaining lifeline of Chawangkining - T Vaichong via Makui Ashang PMGSY road was cut off Sunday morning.

A truck reportedly loaded with illegal timber logs was also washed down into the river by the flash flood.

The ill-fated truck was detained by the Assam Rifles at Banglabung but escaped taking advantage of the heavy rainfall to meet the unfortunate end.

The flash flood also damaged the protection wall/base of the Bailey bridge over Twilang/Irang river near T Vaichong sub divisional headquarters.

Multiple landslides were reported at various locations in the area.

A lengthy earth fissure has also been witnessed along the PMGSY road from Chawangkining between Harup Naga and Tapon Naga villages by a police team of Kangpokpi which was returning after they could not further proceed towards Tapon Naga and T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters for spot inspection.

A Tata 407 vehicle of the police team also got stuck in the mud in between Harup Naga and Tapon Naga village.

Fortunately, with the assistance of some local people, it was towed and returned back without proceeding further towards the sub-divisional headquarters.

A heavy mudslide also reportedly occurred near Thonglang Atongba, sweeping away some portions of the road.

Meanwhile, KSO Twilang block president Enock Kipgen has appealed to the authority concerned to look into the hardships of the people, especially, those whose houses and hotels were damaged and compensate the losses.

On the other hand, Liangmei Naga Council Eastern Zone general secretary M Dinpi urged the authorities concerned for early restoration of the PMGSY road connecting Chawangkining and T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarter as it has been serving as the only lifeline of the people of the area.

SDO T Vaichong also reportedly rushed to the sub-divisional headquarters on receiving the news of flash flood but could not reach the area owing to heavy rainfall triggering multiple landslides and deplorable road conditions.

However, it is reported that the SDO dispatched relief materials for the people of T Vaichong sub-divisional headquarters.

JIRI: Incessant rainfall for the last few days has led to overflowing of tributaries of Jiri River and flooding many houses particularly in low lying Sorok Atingbi Kamaranga Muslim village.

This is the second time in around a month that Sorok Atingbi Kamaranga Muslim village has been inundated by overflowing water from Jiri River and its tributaries.

While the affected villagers are taking shelter at nearby safe locations including at Kamaranga Muslim Youth Club building, domestic animals are being shifted to higher grounds.

Meanwhile, overflown Jiri River and its tributaries also flooded many roads in Jiribam including the road leading to Jiri college, thereby hampering movement of vehicles and people.

NONEY: A private house belonging one Miujanang Gonmei was badly damaged by landslide at New Salem, Tamenglong Ward No.4, on Sunday morning.

Half of the house was covered by debris of the landslide, forcing it to collapse.

However, there was no report of any casualty.

The family members of ill-fated house were evacuated to a safe place by the neighbours and police.

Some nearby houses are also in danger of being damaged by the landslide, if the rain continues.

At Kaiphundai village along the NH-37, a massive landslide caused disruption to vehicular movement.

Landslides and mudslides occurred along the Imphal-Jiribam Road near Longkao village and between Kambiron and Nungba and Khongshang and Taubam village.

Landslides and mudslides also occurred in many locations in the Imphal-Noney section.

The alternate route that connects NH-37 to Bishnupur-Khoupum-Rengpang road was also blocked blockade due to landslides that occurred between Taudaijang and Thingdingmun and Taudaijang and Rengpang villages.

Major rivers - Ijei, Iril, Irang, Barak, Makru and Leimatak -reached the danger level while low-lying areas have been submerged.

Inter-village roads were also disconnected due to landslides in many locations as telecommunication and power supply services continue to be badly disrupted in the two districts.

Meanwhile, a slab culvert between Kambiron and Nungba along the NH-37 was washed away on Sunday, cutting off the area from the rest of the country.
