Actress Sofia Mayengbam aims big to cultivate watermelon

Film Actress and Ambassador of Nahakpam Foundation for Development Sofia Mayengbam is aiming big to cultivate Watermelon with an aim to uplift economy of the state.
She was speaking to mediapersons while inspecting her watermelon farm at Kakching Khunou.
The Watermelon farm was established on a land area of 2 acres with financial help from Nahakpam Foundation.
While it has been known that watermelon can be successfully cultivate in the state, there is still need to stress on new techniques to increase the production.
Stating that there are many people in the state who earn their livelihoods from cultivating watermelon, she informed that Nahakpam Foundation is planning to organise a state level Watermelon festival very soon.

She further informed that there will be no fashion queen contest in the festival and it will be organised in an academic manner to ensure proper awareness to the farmers.
She also stressed the need to include such venture in the Horticulture plan of the state government's financial plan.
According to a farmer, at least 4,000 watermelon plants can be planted in a 2 acre land.
It takes 5 to 6 months for a watermelon plant to get ready for harvesting and Rs 20,000 to 30,000 is required to plant watermelon in an acre of land.
However, with the help of Nahakpam Foundation, they had successfully cultivated watermelon in their land.
He also appealed to the state government to raise awareness into the matter.
