Imphal, February 26 2014 :
Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who is also in-charge of Home Department, has said that the police have been asked to take up measures for banning tambola/housie in the State.
He was replying to a query raised by MLA Kh Joykishan during the Question Hour of the third sitting of 7th Session of 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly today.
While asking the Home Minister whether the housie/tambola is legalized in the State, MLA Joykishan stated that considering the trend of local clubs and organizations selling housie tickets in bulk to MLAs, the salaries of MLAs would not be enough to buy the tickets.
The tambola games have become almost like gambling by going far apart from the objective of fund raising for the organizations/clubs concerned.
Gaikhangam further said that there is no concrete law to ban tambola in the State.
However, the State Government would consider banning the game under the Gambling Act or Anti-Money Laundering Act.
The police have been asked to bust such illegal games in the State, he added.
On a question of MLA Shyamkumar regarding the number of central paramilitary forces deployed in the State, Deputy CM Gaikhangam said that only Assam Rifles is the Central Paramilitary Force in the State and it has 26 battalions deployed in the State.
Moreover, the Assam Rifles is under the control of Central Government and not State Government.
The personnel of Assam Rifles are engaged in guarding international border and CI Ops in notified areas of the State, he added.
To another question of Shyamkumar on the investigation of Kumari Asheibam Rajeshwori's murder, Gaikhangam replied that investigation of the case is almost completed and charge-sheet would be submitted soon.
Replying to a query of MLA Joykishan, Home Minister Gaikhangam said that 285 SI's and Jemadars selected in 2013 have not yet joined their services in the Police Department due to delay in issuing appointment letters following a writ petition filed by Md Waheb and four others in Manipur High Court.
To another question of MLA P Brojen, Gaikhangam said that there are nine fire sub-stations in the valley districts whose area of jurisdiction is 10 sq km in urban area and 50 sq km in rural area as per the norms of Standing Fire Advisory Council.
