Imphal, February 26 2014 :
A man arrested in connection with an elopement case was found hung to death inside a police lock-up.
Thoudam Digbijoy (37) s/o Nabakumar of Wangoi Makha Leikai was found hung to death inside the lock-up of Wangoi police station this morning.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club this afternoon, Nabakumar said that they were informed about Digbijoy's death at around 8 am.
Digbijoy brought home a girl on February 22 and he was arrested by Wangoi Police the next day in connection with the elopement case.
"For his faults, we never visited him in the police custody nor made any attempt to secure his release," Nabakumar said.
Digbijoy is survived by his wife and three children.
Charging that delinquency on the part of Wangoi Police was responsible for his son's death, Nabakumar said that circumstances leading to Digbijoy's death looked suspicious.

Taking strong exception to the death of Digbijoy inside police custody, people blocked Mayai Lambi at Wangoi Keithel for sometime.
In the meantime, a group of women gathered in front of Wangoi police station but no untoward incident was reported.
Digbijoy was kept alone inside a lock-up and he was found hung to death from the inner door using his shirt, said a police source.
Digbijoy's body was pulled down in the presence of a Magistrate and forensic experts and the process recorded on video and still cameras.
After conducting inquest, the corpse was taken to RIMS morgue.
Meanwhile, family members of the deceased have urged authorities concerned to take up befitting actions against delinquent police personnel of Wangoi police station.
Later, a public meeting was held at Wangoi Khuningthek and a joint action committee has been formed.
The meeting resolved to launch different kinds of agitation until the facts and circumstances leading to the death of Digbijoy are established.
