Training on dementia care begins

A five-day orientation training programme on dementia care/ management was inaugurated today at Manipur Press Club here.
The programme is being jointly organised by National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt of India and Alzheimer's and Related Disorders Society of India.
Prof Ksh Bimola Devi, former Dean SSS, MU; RK Nayansana Devi, former Director of Agriculture dept and former Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board; Prof Th Madhuri Devi of Library and Information Science Dept, MU and Dr K Shantibala Devi, Asst prof of Psychiatric Dept, JNIMS attended the programme as the chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the occasion, Prof Ksh Bimola said that only ten percent of persons with senile dementia are given treatment while the rest 90 percent are seemingly cloaked by family members.
RK Nayansana said that dementia comes along with old age and stress related problems.
She urged all concerned to be extra-cautious in dealing with aged citizens who are vulnerable to the disease.
Nayansana also stressed on the importance of vegetarian diet in order to minimise the chance of getting infected with the disease.
