Imphal, February 26 2014 :
In yet another low scoring match, it was the ball which won over the bat as THAU managed to beat a fighting ESU by 18 runs in the 1st Plate Cricket Tournament being played at the Luwangpokpi Cricket Stadium, Luwangshangbam today.
On winning the toss, THAU opted to bat first and this proved to be tactically right as the pitch started crumbling in the latter part of the match.
Taking the crease, Sunil led the way with 17 off 19 balls followed by Amarjit with 15 off 29 balls and Jelson 11 off 16 balls.
With the other batsmen failing to contribute anything substantial, THAU folded up for 92 runs in 28.4 overs.
Sivananda and Rajiv of ESU led the bowling to scalp three wickets each and restrict THAU to 92 runs.
Chittaranjan also chipped in with two valuable wickets to ensure that THAU did not reach the three figure mark.
Set a very modest target of 93, the ESU batsmen however failed to live up to the incisive bowling of THAU with wickets falling at regular interval.
Krishna of THAU led the charge returning with figures of 3 wickets while the other bowlers also chipped with valuable wickets.
Chittaranjan, Pritam and Sanjit kept a light line and length and with the pitch crumbling picked up two wickets each leaving the ESU batsmen in tatters.
In their haste to reach the modest target of 93, the ESU batsmen went for the big hits which ultimately proved to be their undoing as they folded up for 74 runs in 30.4 runs to gift the match to THAU by 18 runs.
For his fine contribution with the ball in picking up three wickets, Krishna of THAU walked away with the man of the match award.
This was the 28th match of the tournament.
Tomorrow Model Club will take on Mayaikoibi.
