Imphal, July 12, 2013:
With the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBDS), Imphal existing without a regular Director for the last four years, it has been facing a whole lot of problem in execution of its works.
According to reports received from the institute, IBDS at Imphal was established in 2001 under the Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology and its normal works started in 2003. At present, there are 17 scientists doing research on Bio-resources, micro-organisms, plants and insects and fishery science.
In addition to this, researches in various fields are on with the initiation of Women Scientist Scheme.
The institute is also engaged in over 40 projects under the external funded projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology and these projects involved more than 100 local research scholars in addition to selecting 5 research scholars to take up PhD.
At present, there are 20 scholars doing research works in IBDS.
The report further informed that the proposal to set up a Bio resource park of the institute at Pangei has not been materialized due to the law and order situation of the State.
As such, a world class laboratory will be set up just adjacent to the present institute at Takyelpat.
The land for the said purpose has also been taken on lease.
However, a regular Director of the Institute is required to construct and develop the world class laboratory.
And, it is very unfortunate that no regular Director of the institute has been appointed for the last four years.
The Central government is also not sending in any Director and the State Government is not pressing the Centre in this regard.
