Kangpokpi meet vows to fight drug menace

Worried over widespread use, sale and supply of illegal/contra-band drugs in Kangpokpi town, denizens of the town have decided to thoroughly cleanse the district headquarters of the problem of drug menace.
A public meeting was jointly organised by Kangpokpi Town Committee (KTC), Kangpokpi Women Welfare Organisation (KWWO), Kangpokpi Youth Union (KYU) and others on Wednesday to discuss various issues including 'War on Drugs', Asian Highway bypass of Kangpokpi town, etc.
The meet which was chaired by KTC chairman Angam Leivon seriously viewed the increasing menace of drugs which has become a threat to the younger generation of the town in particular and the nation as a whole.
To eradicate the town completely from drugs, Kangpokpi denizens unanimously declared a War on Drugs' and reaffirmed to totally prohibit the use, sale and supply of drugs in Kangpokpi and also to identify immediately all drugs users, sellers, and suppliers, while KTC, KWWO, and KYU were vested with full authority of sternly dealing with all such illegal/contraband drug cases as deemed fit.
The meeting also agreed that public authority will take stern punitive action against any such drug users, sellers, and suppliers of Kangpokpi town in accordance with prevailing customary laws or whatsoever involved will be reported or handed over to the police as deemed fit.
It also unanimously resolved that all parents of drug abusers in the town should send their respective wards/children to drug rehabilitation centres or juvenile correction centre within one month with immediate effect, lest punitive measures will be taken up by the public.
KTC will frame rules and regulations on the quantum of punishment or penalty which may be imposed on drug users, sellers, and suppliers under the purview of customary laws and specified rules frame in this regard, the meet decided.
In connection with the Asian Highway By-pass of Kangpokpi town, the meeting unanimously resolved to fight tooth and nail in favour of the proposed Asian Highway on the western flank of the town and request the NHIDCL to continue the construction work of the by-pass road as suggested.
It may be recalled that considering public safety, people of Kangpokpi town proposed for the By-pass project on the western flank of the town which was formally approved by NHIDCL and the work for the same began with clearance of all paddy fields and forest areas along the alignment of route.
However, the work on the by-pass road was later dropped and discontinued due to complaint filed by other villages.
As the matter has been taken seriously, public of Kangpokpi town further resolved that any individual, association, or organisation who/that act against the wishes of people of Kangpokpi town will be dealt with sternly as deemed fit by the public.
Various problems owing to scarcity of water in the town and differences in monthly fees charged by the private water suppliers were also discussed and KTC was entrusted to look into the matter.
The issue of air pollution caused by burning of solid waste at a garbage dumping site at Mission campus was also discussed at the meeting.
