The 2nd Re-Play 2012 Internesenal Film Kumhei, a unique international film festival on sports and performances, which would go on till January 15, began today at the auditorium of JN Manipur Dance Academy, Imphal.
The film extravaganza is being organized by Manipur Film Development Corporation (MFDC) in association with Hun-tre ! International Manipuri Projects.
The event is also being supported by Dance Films Association, New York; Film Festival Dokumenter, Yogjakarta; The School of Hard Knocks, New York and Komunitas Dokumenter, Yogjakarta.
True to its promise of bringing the best selections from distinguished International film festivals, the festival would witness Indian premiere of many outstanding films from different parts of the world.
Inaugurating the film festival as Chief Guest, Governor Gurbachan Jagat observed that such festivals provide an opportunity to our film aficionados to witness good films produced in different parts of the globe and they can keep themselves abreast of International trends.
Some of our film makers had the opportunity to participate in various International film festivals, but such people are few.
Noting that during the course of the film festivals, two workshops, one on documenting dance with Yoshiko and another on screenplay with Alexandra Viets are being conducted, the Governor said that these workshops would make this film festival all the more important for Manipur.
"I am told that developing a good screenplay is limited in Manipur and I hope that the workshop will provide an opportunity to our local talents to pick up skills", Governor Gurbachan Jagat expressed confidence.
He also pointed out that Manipur which is rich in cultural heritage, especially in dances, needs to film these beautiful dances for posterity and for viewers in other parts of the country and the world.
Indonesian filmmaker from Aandibachtiar Yusuf, Artiste Yuli Sugianto, Yoshiko Chuma and Alexandra Viets were also present on the dais of the inaugural function.
On the first day of the festival, Romeo Juliet, a 108-minute long film directed by Andibachtiar Yusuf was screened.
It was the Indian premiere of the film.
Starring Edo Borne, Sissy Prescilia and Ramon Tungka and director Andibachtiar Yusuf in person, William Shakespeare's classic gets a daring and accomplished Indonesian football setting in the film centering around the character, Rangga, a fanatic supporter of Jakarta's Persija Football Club, and his fellow fans who ambush the fans of the Vikings, their greatest rivals from the city of Bandung On the second day of the festival tomorrow, there will be workshop on documenting dance with Yoshiko Chuma and screenplay workshop with Alexandra Viets in the morning and 'Rasinah : The Enchanted Mask' directed by Rhoda Grauer and 'With: Dragons beget dragons' directed by Ariani Dhamawan would be screened in the afternoon starting from 2.30 pm.
This would be followed by 'Dance Shorts', screening of four dance documentation films selected and presented by Yashiko Chuma.
The four dance documentation films to be screened are 'People Get Ready' of Steven Reker, 'The Golden Legend' of Christopher Williams, 'Group dynamics and visual sensitivity' of Ursula Eagly and 'Manipur Dairy' of Yoshiko Chuma.
