Imphal, January 11 2012:
Taking due note of the congruence of their political objectives, the United Naga Council (UNC) has decided to back the Naga National Front in the forthcoming 10th Manipur Legislative Assembly elections.
Various political parties including the ruling Congress oppose NPF for its 'Greater Nagalim' agenda.
In spite of the stiff opposition NPF has fielded its candidates 12 Naga-dominated constituencies in Manipur including one in Churachandpur.
In a statement issued by its 'publicity wing' today, the UNC, which is demanding an alternative administrative arrangement for the Nagas in Manipur, said during a meeting of its 'Federal Assembly', convened recently it resolved to support the NPF.
The UNC that ended its prolonged economic blockade on Imphal-Silchar and Imphal-Dimapur routes recently to denounce the state government's alleged bid to bifurcate Naga area to create new districts also decided to resolve to check and control malpractices in the coming polls.
"As a logical extension of the discussions and decisions taken in the series of presidential council meetings, the Federal Assembly of the UNC held on the 2nd of January, 2012 resolved that the Naga People's Front would be supported in the ensuing 10th General Assembly Election to be held on 28th January, 2012," the Naga apex body said.
"The resolution was adopted taking into account the situation of the Nagas in Manipur and the commonality in principle and ideology with the NPF on the political agenda of the Nagas," added the statement.
It said the house also resolved to check and control unfair means by political parties and candidates and to control extravagant spending in feasting and luring of voters with money or in any other manner and added that this is to be enforced by the concerned tribe units/district organization.
In May last year, the month in which NPF opened its Manipur unit office in Senapati district, all political parties in the state opposed the move because of the formation of greater Nagaland incorporated in the party's constitution.
