Imphal, May 05 2014:
Villagers of Wairi under Khundrakpam in Imphal East district today barred Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam and Lamlai constituency MLA Kh Biren from laying a foundation stone for development of a cemetery in Sambei Purum Reserved Forest area.
Protestors from Wairi village in the vicinity of the forest area objected to the plan for development of the proposed cemetery for neighbouring three Kabui villages in Lamlai area.
A large number of villagers blocked Sawongbung-Wairi road since morning today to protest against the Government's plan.

They placed dirty clothes and large timbers in the middle of the road to stop the Deputy Chief Minister and the MLA from going ahead with their plan to lay the foundation stone.
Protestors said they will continue to agitate until the Government withdraws the proposed plan.
The demonstration jointly spearheaded by Wairi Social Welfare Association, Wairi Yakairol Club and Wairi Development Committee kicked off after a decision was taken to oppose the plan, said Deven Khuman, president, Wairi Yakairol Club.
He said the Government did not give prior information to any of the neighbouring villages regarding the plan.
Deven said that no cemetery would be allowed to come up in the area which was declared as a Reserved Forest by the Maharajah of the then kingdom of Manipur after durbars were held twice on September 7, 1936 and July 2, 1973 .
The Government of Manipur has also been protecting the area measuring about 19.40 sq km for a long time, he said, adding, "We condemn the Government's plan" .
He further announced that hunting and burning of forest for commercial purposes will not be allowed in the area in future.
