Imphal, May 25 2014:
United Committee Manipur (UCM) on Sunday announced free education would be provided to all children of families of the 18 martyrs of 'June 18 Uprising' and victims of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act.
Free education from standard I to X will be given to all children of families of the June 18 Uprising and victims of AFSPA from the next academic session in various private schools of the State, UCM president Y Nabachandra announced during a press meet at the organisation's office here.
An agreement in this regard has been reached between UCM and All Manipur Recognised Private School Welfare Association (AMRPSWA), Nabachandra said.
UCM has taken the initiative in view of the huge amount of money that parents have to spend on the education of their wards, particularly by low-income families of the victims of AFSPA and those who have laid down lives for the protection of State's territorial integrity.
Proper verification would be conducted by the committee and the concerned school authorities before such children are given admission to these private educational institutions.
Nabachandra lauded the AMRPSWA for its pro-active role and valuable contribution that has made it realized the long cherished dream of the committee.
He said admission and tuition fees for such children seeking admission to class 1 to 10 will be totally exempted, but providing of free school uniforms and transportation to these students will be considered later on as the next step.
UCM hopes that all Missionary Schools in the State will follow suit in providing free education to such children.
