Kangpokpi, June 08 2020:
Observing the 129th martyr's day of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri, the All Manipur Gorkha Students' Union urged the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh to erect a statue of the first Gorkha martyred in India's freedom movement who led a contingent of Gorkha soldiers for revolutionary Manipuri hero Yubraj Tikendrajit Singh.
LB Adhikari, president of AMGSU said that the union and its various units fondly commemorated the martyr's day of Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri at its office premises at Kanglatongbi by strictly maintaining social distancing protocol.
According to Manipur Who is Who - 1891, published by the Government in 1990, Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri was sentenced to death on June 8, 1891, at the Western Gate of Kangla.
He left the British Army to join the native force of Manipur led by Yubraj Tikendrajit and Thangal General.
Niranjan Singh Chhetri was appointed as a Subedar in the native rebel army by the Yubraj himself, Adhikari said.
Continuing that Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri was hanged to death by the British on this day in 1891 for his role in the "Revolt of Manipur", he added that though his bravery and patriotism was unparalleled, his act of patriotism was lost in pages of history.
Adhikari further said that Subedar Niranjan Singh Chhetri was amongst the heroes of Anglo-Manipur War who fought against the colonial British and appealed the State Government to erect a statue of the forgotten hero in a suitable place within the State capital without any further delay.
The observation was also attended by Meena Bista, Pradhan, Kanglatongbi GP, Deepa Thapa, Up-Pradhan, KGP, Shiva Kumar Basnet, ex-Pradhan, Gopal Limbu, Headmaster, Froebel English School and Devi Prasad Thapa, Nepali poet among others.
