Imphal, June 08 2020:
Congress has hailed the judgement passed by a single bench of the High Court of Manipur today which barred seven MLAs from entering the Manipur Legislative Assembly until the Speaker's Tribunal disposes the disqualification case filed against them.
Speaking to media persons at his Babupara quarters today, Congress MLA K Meghachandra hailed the High Court's order as a landmark verdict.
But the Congress party and the people of Manipur are filled with a sense of scorn over the fact the Courts have been compelled to give repeated directions to the Speaker of Manipur Legislative Assembly, Meghachandra remarked.
Courts issuing repeated directions to the Assembly Speaker is a matter of utter shame, he said and added that it hurts the prestige of the Speaker's post.
The order passed by the High Court today has proved that democracy has failed in Manipur, he continued.
He said that the disqualification case was filed against seven MLAs who defected from Congress at the Speakers' Tribunal way back in 2018 .
While Congress party has been waiting for justice all this time, the Speaker even defied directives issued by the Supreme Court, he alleged.
The apex Court issued a directive asking the Speaker to dispose all pending cases related to disqualification within three months but the Speaker is not bothering to dispose the disqualification case filed against the seven MLAs till date, Meghachandra said.
There is no meaning in the process initiated by the Speaker's Tribunal only after knowing that the Supreme Court or the High Court is about to take up some steps, he said.
Nonetheless, he said that he was satisfied with the judgement passed by the High Court of Manipur today and exuded confidence that justice would be delivered finally.
