A public condolence for the two Kongkan villagers who were shot dead by cadres of UNLF on December 28 was organised on Sunday afternoon at Tangkhul Naga Long ground and tension simmered out by nightfall in Ukhrul with the torching of a vehicle.
In the aftermath of the public condolence service, the tension escalated in Ukhrul town with angry mob torching the official vehicle (Scorpio) of Deputy Commissioner of Ukhrul at about 7.30pm in front of TNL office.
To disperse the mob, security personnel also shot few rounds of gunfire in the air.
This morning, the mortal remains of K.Kumar and K.Ramshang, the two victims, were brought to Ukhrul District Hospital from Kamjong Chassad police station and an autopsy had been conducted by a team of medical experts deputed from Imphal.
In the afternoon, various Tangkhul civil societies led by Tangkhul Naga Long (TNL) carried the bodies to the ground for public condolence that was attended by thousands of people.
Representatives of UNC, TKS, Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long (TMNL), Tangkhul Shanao Long (TSL) among others addressed the gathering and vehemently condemned the UNLF's brutal killing of two innocent villagers of Kongkan.

In the public condolence, the UNC general secretary Gaidon Kamei announced the four-point declaration a component of the memorandum to be submitted to Prime Minister of India.
The four-point declaration demanded that the UNLF cadres involved in the killing be produced before the public and tried under Naga customary law; the KCP cadres involved in the beastly act of trying to rape tribal girls at Napet Pali in Imphal East on December 24 be produced before the Naga people for trial under Naga customary law; to tag those involved at Kongkan killing and Napet Pali rape attempt as 'wanted' by Government of India immediately; and that if the demands were not met by the Government of India, then UNC will take its own course of action and any eventualities should be borne by the Government of India.
After the condolence service, tension ran high among the public as some Tangkhul frontal bodies decided to take the bodies to DC's residential bungalow to register their displeasure and condemnation.
The move was reportedly objected by some sections.
In this wake, the DC arrived at TNL office and held meeting with representatives of Tangkhul bodies.
At this time, the restless crowd pelted stones on the vehicle and subsequently led to the arson.
As the mob set afire the vehicle, the security personnel of DC fired few rounds in the air and have to scamper for cover sensing trouble from the swelling crowd.
Thousands of women from different localities of Ukhrul town came out and took a torch rally through the streets till late into the night.
However, no untoward incident occurred.
At around 9.35pm, public took the bodies from TNL ground and put them into the custody of TKS office.
