Drive launched against hunting in Thoubal

Thoubal, December 30 2012:
The Kakching Forest Division has launched a drive against poaching in an attempt to check the activities of hunters in Thoubal district.
Speaking to this correspondent, Forest Range Officer of Kakching, Naorem Munal said the drive has been launched to check the activities of illegal migratory bird hunters while urging all concerned to extend cooperation to the efforts so as to preserve the fauna of the State which are is the brink of extinction.
The forest officials have recovered eight 100mx10ft large nets which were laid to trap birds from the adjoining areas of Irengband and Tekcham-Tentha of Thoubal district while launching a drive this morning around 6.30, said N Munal.
However, the hunters escaped taking advantage of the thick mist.
Maintaining that hunting of migratory birds is prohibited by law, the forest officer said any hunter arrested would be penalised under Wild Life Protection Act, 1972.The penalty under the Act includes three years imprisonment or a fine of Rs 25,000 or both.

He urged all concerned to provide information if they come across such hunters.
Appreciating the initiatives of People for Animals, Thoubal towards the protection and preservation of wild animals and birds, N Munal also accentuated the need to promote and spread awareness on wildlife protection to all sections.
Meanwhile, the forest officer further drew the attention of the authority concerned over the faced by forest officials of Kakching in their drive against hunting.
