The 292nd year of the burning of Puya (burning of ancient scriptures) was observed today at Uttra Mang, located inside the Kangla.
The commemoration programme was organised by the International Observation Committee on Puya Mei Thaba (ICOP) under the theme "Remember, Review and Revive for Love, Peace and Integrity" .

Speaking as the chief guest of the main function, Professor W Nabakumar stated that this event should not be taken lightly as Manipur suffered the brunt of religious colonisation only after the burning of sacred scriptures.
Above this, the erstwhile kingdom which was once revered in South East Asia became weak and was colonized by the British decades later, he said and added that the content of the burnt scriptures include knowledge and tradition practised by our forefathers which was required to build a healthy society.
This tradition of making family members who went outside to cross a fire first before entering the house and the habit of entering people's house barefoot reflected the rich hygiene and sanitisation knowledge of our forefathers, he added.
"Gaining the knowledge of our traditional practice is imperative to build a better Manipur," he opined.
Advisor of Meetei National Front (MNF), N Tomba; MEELAL vice president Keinahanbi, MNF chief advisor, M Naodalenkhomba and GP Women College Assistant Professor Dr W Romesh were also the presidium members.
Maichou Ningshing Mana and Chingmi Tammi Nungshi Lipun Mana for this year were given to A Tababi from Wangkhei Khunou and L Henboi from Kangpokpi.
The ICOP also felicitated Guru Rewben Mashangva who was awarded Padma Shri recently.
