Imphal, May 18 2023:
Information Centre for Hill Areas Manipur (ICHAM) has urged the State Government to take up measures to ensure a safe and peaceful way for the displaced families to return to their homes.
Speaking to media persons during a press meet held at Manipur Press Club today, Nongthombam Rajendro alias Boy, chief advisor, ICHAM stated that the ethnic clash which erupted on May 3 has undone the efforts of ICHAM to unite the numerous communities of the State since 2001 .
He called upon the leaders of both Meitei and Kuki communities to come together and initiate a dialogue to resolve the issue.
Displaced Kuki families who have fled from the valley area and Meitei families who have fled from the hill areas currently seeking shelter in various relief camps should be provided a safe passage back to their homes, he said.
This would restore some semblance of normalcy and co-existence in the State and ICHAM would also assist in any way to make this happen, Nongthombam Rajendro added.
ICHAM president Yuimi Horam stated that ICHAM was formed with members from all different communities in the State with the goal of fostering peace and unity among the people under the slogan "Peace Through Development" .
Yuimi Horam called upon the State Government to provide adequate compensation to those who have suffered losses as a result of the civil unrest.
Further, the Government should grant ex-gratia for the lives lost and extend all possible assistance to those sheltering at relief camps, Yuimi Horam continued.
Further calling for all Government offices to be opened along with resumption of classes for schools and colleges, Yuimi Horam maintained that people who have fled the State should also be provided with a safe way to return to their homes and both communities must be provided full security protection by the State Government.
