Imphal, May 18 2023:
The Transporters and Drivers Council (TDC) has appealed to all the drivers of good laden trucks stranded along National Highway-2 (Imphal-Dimapur road) due to the ethnic clash to bring in the essential commodities to Imphal through National Highway-37 (Imphal-Jiribam road) instead.
Addressing a press briefing at the office of TDC at MG Avenue today, Council president H Ranjit said that transporters have been facing extreme difficulties in moving along the two National Highways since the eruption of the ethnic conflict on May 3 .
Saying that the TDC didn't pressure the Government to make an arrangement to bring in the transporters given the law and order situation, H Ranjit maintained that the Council nonetheless is in touch with the Government over the matter constantly.
He further said that the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers' Union (AMRTDMWU) and Senapati District Drivers' Welfare Union (SD-DWU) have distributed relief materials to the drivers stranded along Imphal-Dimapur road two-three times.
Continuing that transporters carrying petroleum products and essential items have started heading toward Imphal via Imphal-Jiribam road since the last four days after the intervention of the Government and the same is still continuing, H Ranjit maintained that TDC and the drivers' union are monitoring the movement of good carrying trucks to ensure the safety of drivers.
Further appealing to all the drivers stranded along Imphal-Dimapur road to take Imphal-Jiribam road to bring the essentials safely to Imphal, H Ranjit maintained that security arrangements have been made along the stretch of National Highway-37 .
Continuing that the commodities being brought by the drivers are not for a particular community but for the entire people living in Manipur, H Ranjit appealed to people living in hill districts especially Kukis to not attack the drivers.
He also appealed to all concerned to not politicise the issue being faced by drivers.
