Empowering women will improve socio-economic status of families: Th Biswajit

Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Thongam Biswajit Singh has categorically stated that empowering womenfolk will improve socio-economic status of families in rural areas during an observance of Azaadi Ka Amrit Mohotsav at Kongba Khunou Awang Leikai, Thongju, today.
The observation was organised by the Block Resource Centre-Start Up Village Entrepreneurship Programme (SVEP), Keirao Bitra Block, Imphal East, under Manipur State Rural Livelihood Mission, Manipur.
As a part of the observation, 44 Self Help Groups were provided loans while the best performing SHG Award carrying a cash award of Rs 1 lakh was given to a group from Sawombung Block.
Speaking as a chief Guest of the observation, the Minister said that establishing Self Help Groups in rural areas aims at eliminating unemployment and enhancing socio-economic status of the people in rural areas.

The Minister also said that above all the support from the Government and others, sustenance and strengthening of the SHGs depend entirely on the determination and hard work of the members alone.
On the issue of training under capacity building for SHGs under different departments, he said that these trainings will enhance the value of their products in the market.
He further expressed the need to address the lack of markets to encourage the members of SHG.
Biswajit also talked about the Mission for Economic Empowerment of Traditional Artisans & Craftsmen (MEETAC).
He asked the SHG members to contact MEETAC to look for ways to enhance the value of their products.
While speaking on the observance of the Azaadi Ka Amrit Mohotsav, he said that the department of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj has taken up various developmental activities including tree plantation drives as a part of the observation.
He said that Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is a country-wide campaign and 'we need to convert it into a Jan Andolan or mass movement'.
Azaadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav is an initiative of the Government of India to commemorate the 75 years of Independence of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements.
It was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12th March, 2021 .
The Mahotsav will continue till August 15, 2023.Today's observation was also attended by Uchekon Nongpok GP Pradhan Nongmaithem Jadumani Singh and Block Resource Centre president Lourembam Suni Devi among others.
