Imphal, September 09 2021:
As a part of its continued efforts to wipe out the issue of drug menace in the State, Coalition Against Drugs & Alcohol (CADA) organised an awareness programme at Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai today adhering to Covid SOPs.
The programme has been jointly organised by CADA Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai Unit, Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai Nisha Bandh Association and CADA Imphal West District Committee, said a press release issued by CADA.
In today's programme, Hijam Priyokumar, President of CADA; Naorem (o) Shakhi, Secretary of Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai Nisha Bandh Association; Ningthoujam Doren, Vice President of CADA attended as the presidium members and Dipanjit Ningthoujam,Vice-President of CADA spoke as the resource person.
Speaking on the occasion, Dipanjit Ningthoujam stated that the report submitted by the Select Committee Manipur to the Manipur Legislative Assembly regarding the approval of brewing of local liquor in Manipur is baseless and misleading.
Expressing discontent on the submission of such a report to the Secretary of Manipur Legislative Assembly, he said that many are against the legalisation of liquor brewing in the State as it will lead to more harmful impacts in the society as compared to the estimated benefits.
Ningthoujam Doren stated that as per the report by National Health Survey, there are 0.9 percent women who consume liquor and 37.5 percent men in the State.
Amid such a situation, legalising of liquor will be against the well being of the people of the State and many may be addicted to liquor thereby leading to a chaotic and deplorable state, he added.
Talking about the concerning situation of Manipur where many are using tobacco products and drugs daily, Hijam Priyokumar said that crores of rupees are being spent on these useless and harmful activities which leads to major health issues sometimes leading to cancer.
In view of the above situation, instead of taking up stringent activities to save the people from the clutch of drugs and other damaging substances, the step to legalise liquor is not called for, he added.
Naorem (o) Sakhi, Secretary of Kodompokpi Mayai Leikai Nisha Bandh Association lauded CADA for its relentless activities to save the people of the State from the grip of substance abuse and gave assurance to provide all possible support to CADA in its future endeavours.
