Noney, July 29 2021:
International Tiger Day 2021 was observed at Tamenglong district headquarters on Thursday.
The event was attended by Forest, Environment & Climate Change minister Awangbow Newmai as chief guest and ADC Tamenglong caretaker chairman Namsinrei Panmei as president while Kh Tamenglong DFO Hitler Singh and honorary wildlife warden Nehemiah Panmei were the guests of honour.
Rainforest Club Tamenglong, Corbett Foundation and village authority members were also present.
The international Tiger Day is being observed by 'tiger countries' since 2011 as per the resolution of these countries to increase the number of wild tigers in a summit held at Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Speaking at the event, Awangbow pointed out that tiger is the most important carnivorous animal in the food chain system and utmost important component of eco system.
As such, Project Tiger scheme should be extended to Tamenglong Forest Division, he said while observing that Tamenglong certainly has a tiger habitat as several tigers were found killed in different seasons.
If migratory, the killing of tiger could have happened in a particular season, he reasoned.
The minister and other speakers believed that there is vast forest for wildlife in the district.
In their addresses, Nehemiah Panmei called for creation of a new wildlife division office solely for Tamenglong district while Kh Hitler Singh highlighted the need for strengthening the staff of Tamenglong Forest Division, especially for Tamei Range which is understaffed.
The programme was jointly organised by Tamenglong Forest Division, Rainforest Club Tamenglong and Corbett Foundation.
