Federation appeals for uniform land law

Imphal, July 09 2022: Federation of Civil Societies (FoCS) has appealed to the state government for framing a uniform land law for the entire state so as to bring closer the indigenous communities and build a strong united Manipur.

Addressing newspersons at its Wangkhei Ningthem Pukhri Mapal office here on Friday after participating in the 7th Lamjing Meira Memorial observance organised by JCILPS in honour of student martyr Sapam Robindhood, Federation president Thoidingjam Manihar said that having different land laws in the state is akin to advocating divisive policy among the indigenous people.

Instead of just framing a separate land use policy just for hills, the government should scrap the MLRLR Act for valley and Article 371 for hills, and bring a uniform land law as it would help cement the fraternal bond among the different indigenous communities, he maintained.

Regarding the ILP System being implemented in the state, the president said that it is a hollow system, which has no protection for the indigenous people.

It gives more emphasis on the non-locals instead of indigenous people.

As such, the federation will support the JCILPS in its pursuit for a strong and effective ILP System.

They will also support all activities of UCM and AMUCO for promoting unity and strengthening integrity of the state, he added.

Joining the media briefing, FoCS secretary general Angom Punitkumar expressed concern over the issue of urea distribution and said that it will launch different forms of agitation with the farmers unless the government resolves the issue by August end.

He also decried the involvement of MLAs in distribution of urea to farmers while terming it as an act of taking political mileage.
