Imphal, September 19 2023:
The All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) has come out strongly against the physical assault of a journalist and harassment of other journalists by bandh supporters at Thongju Beni Leirak junction of Imphal-Moreh highway.
RIMS authority has also appealed to all Meira Paibis, local clubs and the public to relax the ongoing bandh for doctors, paramedical staff and other officials of the institute and hospital to enable them attend office and hospital in public interest.
Since the eruption of the ongoing crisis on May 3, AMWJU has appealed to the public, through several press notes, not to pose hindrances to the movement of journalists.
But it is a matter of grave concern that journalists on duty have been once again assaulted and harassed, said a press release issued by AMWJU.
A journalist of IS Com was assaulted by some bandh supporters at Thongju Beni Leirak at around 10.20 am today, said AMWJU and added that bandh supporters in some areas of both Imphal East and Imphal West, apart from preventing movement of people, used abusive words against journalists on duty.
It then appealed to all the people not to repeat such acts of harassment of journalists.
If the people are doubtful, identity cards of journalists may be checked and they may be handed over to the authority concerned or AMWJU in case they are found to be imposters, it said.
On the other hand, one Nurse and one attendant were 'disturbed' by some bandh supporters even after they identified themselves as RIMS hospital staff, according to a press release issued by RIMS media advisor N Phillip Singh.
It appealed to the public to kindly acknowledge the service of RIMS and RIMS Hospital staff.
