Woman hurt in police firing

Imphal, August 05 2023:
A 42-year old woman sustained minor injury as a stray bullet scratched her left leg at Singjamei Ngakrabam Leirak Machin when security personnel chased and fired upon a vehicle allegedly used by unidentified miscreants creating trouble at Lilong area today afternoon.
As large numbers of womenfolk were staging protest along Imphal-Moreh road at different points, security personnel were chasing one red colour car (i20) on the charge that they targeted security forces at Lilong area.
At Singjamei Ngakrabam Leirak area, the security personnel fired on the tyre of the car.
In the firing, one woman who was part of a large number of womenfolk blocking the road sustained minor injury from a stray bullet.
The injured woman identified as Asem Rani (42) w/o Mocha of Singjamei Chingamakha was rushed to JNIMS Hospital for treatment.
Her condition is said to be stable.
Soon after, a heated argument broke out between the security personnel and womenfolk who were staging a protest demonstration along the road and were later joined by a large number of youth.
The mob also destroyed the windshield of a police vehicle (SDPO Singjamei) .
In their efforts to control the situation, police fired some rounds of tear gas shells.
Later, additional force of Imphal West district police and Rapid Action Force arrived in the area and took away the vehicle used by unknown person(s).
The area was still tense as a large number of people were gathering along the highway from Singjamei Traffic Point to Moirangkhom till the time of filing this report.
