Assam Rifles units seize areca nuts, plant tree saplings

Troopers of Assam Rifles intercepted a cross-border smuggling operation involving areca nuts in Kamjong district, on Sunday.
According to PRO IGAR (S), acting on credible intelligence regarding the movement of contraband goods along the Indo-Myanmar border, an Assam Rifles team was swiftly deployed and conducted a thorough leading to recovery of 115 bags containing suspected areca nuts estimated to worth approximately Rs 1.140 crore (based on international market rate), the PRO informed, adding that contraband items were being smuggled in two Shaktiman trucks in the vicinity of Phaikoh village (near BP-102) on the Indian side of the international border.
The seized items along with the detainees and the two trucks have been handed over to the Kamjong Forest Department for further legal proceedings, the PRO informed.
On the other hand, troopers of AR conducted a large -scale tree plantation drive at Yainganpokpi and Singjamei COBs on Monday during which total of 30 troops and 65 local residents planted 1820 saplings of various species.
