The Poumai Naga Tsiidoumai Me (PNTM), Shil-long in collaboration with Senapati Forest Division and Naamai Eco-tourism Society (NETS) conducted a one-ay awareness programme cum tree plantation drive on the theme 'Climate Action: Preserve and Explore the Beauty of Nature' at Naamai Zho village on Friday.
Plantation of 30 cherry saplings, installation of tree guards, poster and signature campaign to motivate people not to wait but act and adopt green living were the high-lights of the event during which PNTM Shillong presi-dent PK Francis highlighted the movement around the world to harness the pow-er of education to combat and adapt to climate change and ensure young minds cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving and col-laboration skills needed to take action.
Liyai Forest Range officer Benjamin Ziipao also said that the past experiences have taught the futility of planting saplings witnout management.
The lessons learnt help in modelling a fresh system where sus-tainability is the prime focus.
The model ensures optimization of resources by planting less number of saplings following good agricultural practices and ensuring effective protection mechanism from any poten-tial threats to their survival.
Taking care of the planted saplings is more important than planting thousands of saplings left unattended, he said, adding that there is an urgent need to plant trees with a sense of ownership and belongingness.
Naamai Eco-tourism pres-ident Y Mathew exhorted the novel initiative of the student community and urged other CSOs, society, churches, and individuals to adopt trees and play essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change.
The event ended with a pledge from the participants to adopt the saplings till they attain the age of seven years and endorsing environmen-tal stewardship as a way of life.
