Imphal, September 25 2023:
Maintaining that the new trend of identifying localities by fixing boards as 'Lane-1', 'Lane-2', etc., should be stopped immediately and changed to the original name of the locality, Wakhallon Mannaba Apunba (WAMA) Kangleipak has informed that it would launch a drive in this regard along with other language and script-based organisations very soon.
Speaking on the occasion of celebrating the 3rd foundation anniversary of WAMA held at the office of Lainingthou Sanamahi Temple Board, here on Monday, WAMA president Moirangthem Naokhamba lamented that amid emphasis on promoting and protecting native language and script, there is a trend of identifying localities by affixing numbers on boards by ignoring the existing name of the locality.
Observing such practices will create hurdles in promoting language and script, he suggested that the government stop erecting sign boards and instead inscribe the original name of the locality as in the past in addition to writing the original name of the locality in Meetei Mayek.
WAMA in association with other language and script-based organisations will very soon start launching a drive in this regard, he announced.
MEELAL president Khaidem Ingocha, who was also present on the occasion, said that as the indigenous script remained ignored for a long time we are facing huge problems in trying to promote the script.
He stated that when all the communities in the state learn and understand Meetei Mayek the love among the different communities will increase.
He also pointed out the need to include Meetei Mayek script in the letter heads of ministers and MLAs.
The function was also attended by WAMA advisors Dr Hamom Nabachandra and Namoijam Tomba and All Manipur Recognised Private Schools' Welfare Association president Doren kha Nganba among others.
Floral tributes were paid to the photo of former advisor of WAMA L Rajmohon as a part of the event.
