CRPF DG, MHRC chief meet Governor; net ban extended

CRPF director general Dr Sujoy Lai Thaosen and Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) chairman Justice UB Saha met Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan on Thursday and apprised her of the present turmoil in the state since May 3, due to the ethnic clash between the Kuki and the Meitei communities.
During their meeting, the Governor informed them about the common programme of actions already taken up by the central and state governments to restore peace and tranquillity in the state.
She also told them about the action taken/proposed to be taken by the central government following the assurance given by the Union home minister during his visit to the state from May 29 to June 1 such as constitution of a Peace Committee by the Ministry of Home Affairs with her as the chairperson and the Judicial Enquiry Commission headed by a retired Gauhati High Court Chief Justice.
Further, Uikey reiterated her appeal to all sections of the society irrespective of caste, creed and religion to solve the problem and restore peace through an amicable dialogue and to send all the displaced people to their respective places after pro viding basic amenities for them by the government.
The Governor also conveyed to them that the central government has already sanctioned packages for the affected people in order to enable them to peacefully co-exist.
She further appreciated the efforts made by CRPF for coming in the front-line to rescue affected people since the beginning of ethnic clash.
The Governor was of the view that to start with, violence must be stopped to restore peace and tranquillity.
Meanwhile the state government on Thursday extended the suspension of Internet services for the ninth time till June 20, to prevent the spread of rumours and videos, photos, and messages, which might affect the law and order situation.
Home Department Commissioner T Ranjit Singh, in a notification, said that to thwart the design and activities of anti-national and anti-social elements and to maintain peace and communal harmony and to prevent any loss of life or danger to public/ private property, it has become nec essary to take adequate measures to maintain law and order.

and sending bulk SMS, for facilitating and/or mobilisation of mobs of agitators and demonstrators, which can cause loss of life and/or damage to public/private property by indulging in arson/vandalism and other types of violent activities," Ranjit said in his notification.
The Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) last week asked the state government to consider restoration of internet services which had been suspended since the ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3 .
