Imphal, June 15 2023:
NPP MLA Kh Loken (Wangoi AC) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to effectively check illegal immigration from neighbouring countries, particularly Myanmar.
In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Kh Loken said that incursion of illegal immigrants from neighbouring countries, particularly Myanmar into Manipur must be checked effectively by deploying adequate security forces, specially Border Security Force (BSF) .
These illegal immigrants, most of the time, created unwanted situations not only in the hill districts but even in the valley districts also.
Nonetheless, people of the valley districts have been tolerating the illegal immigrants all these years, Loken said.
He alleged that incursion of illegal immigrants into the State is sometimes reportedly supported by high ranking Kuki police officers and Assam Rifles.
Moreover, most of the drug-trafficking related activities are done by these illegal immigrants in connivance with the Kuki community of the State, he said.
These illegal immigrants have been occupying all the reserved forest areas and they started massive deforestation in order to start poppy cultivation.
Most of the poppy cultivations are done in Kuki dominated areas, the NPP MLA said.
Due to massive and relentless deforestation in all the Kuki dominated areas, the State has been facing severe environmental and ecological challenges, he continued.
The violent crisis which erupted on May 3 was the handiwork of these illegal immigrants to snatch the lands and properties of Meiteis who have been living in Churachandpur district for the last more than a century, MLA Loken said.
