Silchar drivers decide not to operate in state

Drivers belonging to Silchar Truck Drivers' Association have decided not to ply their trucks carrying essential items to Manipur.
A key functionary of the association informed The People's Chronicle that drivers belonging to the association have unanimously decided not to operate in Manipur.
The decision came after a truck loaded with rice coming from Jiribam to Imphal driven a member of the association was stopped by an unruly mob at Singjamei Chirom Leikai on June 9 .
The mob not only detained and beat up the non-local driver but also snatched his mobile phone and cash.
After the incident, drivers of the association decided not to ply their trucks to Manipur and demanded clarification from Singjamei Chirom Leikai Club, the key functionary of the association said adding that the club must give reasons for detaining driver bringing essential items amidst the challenging situation.
Meanwhile, one more truck carrying rice from Jiribam to Thoubal was stopped by a mob at Singjamei on Thursday but released.
The same truck was stopped by another mob at Canchipur area.
A driver informed Hie People's Chronicle that trucks carrying rice from Jiribam to Imphal are despatched to warehouses in different parts of the state without security escort amidst the prevailing tense situation.
This indeed forces drivers to face trouble and no driver will be willing to transport essential items to district headquarters without security escort and drivers might even take the extreme step of steering off agitation, the driver informed.
